CONTACT-INFORMATION

Can I report violations on The Universal Declaration of Human Rights and it's conventions to the United Nations?

Human rights violations are serious crimes that many countries have undertaken to prevent, by signing the UN treaties with their optional protocols. Norway is one of the countries that have acknowledged this obligation, and the country has given the UN agencies the opportunity to ensure that human rights are observed.

Reports on human right-abuses can be sent to UN organs by individuals and organizations, if someones rights are violated.

UN treaties are extensions and amplifications of Human Rights.

A short overview of some of the various human rights bodies within the United Nations; The Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights.

The highest position at the UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, is the High Commissioner for Human Rights. The position is in 2014 possessed by Her Excellence Navanethem "Navi" Pillay.

UN Human Rights Council is the UN organ dealing with the situation in a country as a whole.
By agreeing to a "standing invitation", Norway has permitted representatives from the Human Rights Council, to inspect the country's affairs, if violations on civil liberties are reported.

The Special Rapporteurs belong to the Human Rights Council as well. Some of these deal with the situation in their respective countries, such as North Korea and Ivory Coast.
Others have thematic mandates, such as the Special Rapporteur on the Sale of Children: Special Rapporteur on sale of children, child prostitution and child pornography.
These have the opportunity to get into a dialogue with countries that are reported to the respective Special Rapporteurs.

The Human Rights Committee, however, is one of the UN treaty-bodies, who are dealing with individual complaints about violations on the various treaties. The Human Rights Committee receives complaints on violations on the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights.

Practically, this means human rights violations in general.

The Committee on the Rights of the Child, is the body receiving complaints about violations on the Convention on the Rights of the Child.

The Committee on Migrant Workers deals with complaints regarding violations on the International Convention on the Protection of the Rights of All Migrant Workers and Members of Their Families.

The Torture Committee processes reports of alleged torture, and has the opportunity to intervene where "torture or other inhuman treatment or punishment" is committed. Torture Convention is the treaty of the Torture Committee.

There are nine different treaty bodies.
